New US President talks of harnessing natural resources to power industry

Barack Obama was sworn in as US President today, and addressed the need for America to change its fuel supply in his inaugural speech.

"Each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet," he said in the opening quarter of his address.

Obama announced his resolve to "restore science to its rightful place", and alluded to his plans to double renewable energy supplies in the next three years by "harness[ing] the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories."

Towards the end of his speech, Obama warned of the consequences of the US consuming the world's resources "without regard to effect."
